Aside from keeping your balance and being aware of your surroundings, there’s so much more that you need to know when you’re cycling on the road. There are various rules that every cyclist should know to ensure their own as well as other people’s safety.

If you ride your bike often, we’re here to help you become the best cyclist that you can be. Here at Pedal Power Foldie, aside from providing the best folding bikes in the market, we also give cyclists some advice to ensure their safety on the road.

This is because as bicycle lovers ourselves, we want to help other people who share the same passion as us, whether it be on or off the road.

To help improve yourselves as cyclists, we have listed down some of the most important road rules that you should follow at all times:

Know where you’re allowed to bike

As with other vehicles on the road, you should always know where you’re allowed to ride your bike. On some streets and highways, you will find a designated lane for cyclists. If you see this make sure that you’re on that lane and not the car lane because this may lead to accidents that won’t only be bad for you but other people as well.

Also, one of the things that you need to avoid is riding your bike on sidewalks. This path is specifically for pedestrians only to avoid accidents. If you do need to use the sidewalk, you can dismount and walk your bike instead.

Use biking hand signals

As you ride your bike, your communication with drivers and pedestrians is extremely limited. One of the best things you can do is to use your hand signals. There are several of these that you can use and they all have a specific purpose.

The most common hand signals are the ones cyclists use to signify the driver behind them when they’re about to make a turn. If you’re going to turn left, extend your left arm fully to the left side. On the other hand, the signal for turning right requires you to extend your left arm and bend your elbow with your hand facing upward.

You also have to make sure that before you make a turn, look over your shoulder. This will prevent any collision that may happen between you and the car behind you.

Follow all traffic signs and signals

This rule isn’t limited to cyclists but all drivers on the road should follow all traffic signs and signals. All of these rules were implemented for a reason. The main one being to protect drivers and pedestrians from any accidents.  When you disobey this set of rules, you’re increasing the chances of a collision or any type of accident.

These are some of the most important road rules that every cyclist should know. Keep these in mind the next time you head out. These are the things that keep everyone safe and away from accidents.
